For my husband’s 30th birthday, he decided he wanted to rent a sports car. What better place to enjoy the top down in a sports car, than in Monterey. So we quickly began planning his birthday weekend, and booked ourselves a room at The Monterey Hotel.

Cost Effective!
We were searching for a hotel that had a valet for the Lotus we ended up renting, but we needed one that wouldn’t break the bank! We stumbled upon The Monterey Hotel which was only $150/night for our Deluxe King Suite compared to other comparable hotels that were easily over $200/night that weekend. The best part was that we chose the Aquarium package that included 2 tickets to the Monterey Bay Aquarium ($49.95/person).

We pulled up Saturday afternoon and dropped our bags off. The room was nice and spacious and the decor made it feel like home. It may have also been because of the working fireplace in the room.
One of the most important thing my husband and I look forward to with our stays is of course – THE BED. My husband and I always lay on the bed when we first get to the room. This time, we upgraded to a King size bed (another birthday gift for the husband). It definitely passed our comfy test! I almost lost him to a powernap!
We headed back downstairs to head out to our 17-Mile Drive around Pebble Beach, but wandered into their office area and found some magazines with a few helpful tips and recommendations for the area. Here are a few of the quick pictures I took of the recommended nightlife & bars, as well as a map of Monterey. Hope these help you plan your trip too!
Convenient Location
Because of the great location of the hotel, we were only about a 5 minute drive from Cannery Row and the Aquarium. We were also able to walk to dinner over at The Old Fisherman’s Grotto, which was nice because we were both able to enjoy a few drinks with Josh’s birthday dinner.
Later, we enjoyed the nightlife in downtown Monterey and there were plenty of options within walking distance of the hotel. (Again, great location!) Hubby had a great time, but at the end of the night we were thankful to come back to such a comfortable bed. We were a little chilled from bar hopping in the cold Monterey night, so we flipped on the fireplace and enjoyed the warmth. We crashed pretty hard and had a great night’s sleep. I usually toss and turn but I didn’t wake up once that night.
Complementary Breakfast
The next morning we were very thankful for their complementary breakfast buffet. They had quite the spread! Everything from cereal, to bagels, strawberries, yogurt, and even eggs. I brought my sleepy husband breakfast in bed and he seemed delighted to not have to go anywhere else for breakfast.
Other Amenities
Other things to take advantage of at The Monterey Hotel include their workout room, same day laundry service, dry cleaning, and my personal favorite part of this hotel is that they are pet-friendly.
Make sure to also bring your swimsuits because they have a hot tub on site. My husband and I were looking forward to this, but we ran out of time. I was a little disappointed because I love a good dip in the hot tub after a long day of exploring.
Aquarium Package
The last thing on our list was the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Thanks to the Monterey Hotel Aquarium Package we already had our tickets and got to skip the line of people waiting to purchase them. We walked right in and got to exploring!
After a long weekend of sightseeing, we finally decided to check out and hit the road. I had been a little nervous letting anyone else drive and watch over the Lotus we had rented, but when we got our car back from the valet service, and it had been very well taken care of. I breathed a sigh of relief and we headed home.
Wonderful Hotel Stay
The Monterey Hotel is a great place to stay in Monterey and is conveniently close to all the sights. I would recommend it for a quick couples getaway like we did, or even for a family vacation. It’s comfortable, cozy, and most importantly, affordable! I hope to stay here again the next time I find myself in Monterey.
